Adult learners may be afraid to sit in class next to younger students who have gorgeous bodies and more elastic minds. They worry about the sacrifices their children and spouse will have to make. It can even interfere with their ability to learn.
Adult Learners and the Family
Sometimes family members do have to give up something when an adult learner returns to school. Sometimes this may mean a cut in the household income. Instructors can’t do much to change these circumstances. However, they can help ease the stress on the adult learner by being willing to listen to concerns and allowing the student to communicate their fears and desires. Most post-secondary schools will allow students to take a grade of “incomplete” when family emergencies arrive, for example. Older College Students and Past Failures
Adult learners may have left school in the first place because they weren’t succeeding academically. The fear of failing again may keep them from making a sincere effort.
Instructors need to remember that recognition of small successes can bring confidence. When they praise students for effort, good work or thoughtful participation, they may be encouraged to keep trying. This is especially important to instructors who teach developmental courses.
Any approach that helps reduce anxiety is worth consideration. Adult learners have the right to return to school and the ability to succeed once they get there. When instructors are willing to provide the encouragement, resources and flexibility they need, everyone will benefit.
