As a result, its gameplay mechanics heavily draw inspiration from the latter. The objective for each character is to eject opponents from a two-dimensional arena. In addition to traditional fighting moves, characters possess elemental-based attacks and passive abilities that influence the stage itself. This dynamic introduces a metagame where players not only engage in combat but also manipulate the arena. Each character embodies a natural element, central to their distinctive play style. Unlike Smash Bros. counterparts, Rivals of Aether characters boast moves capable of altering the stage’s composition or imposing conditions on opponents. Cecilia D’Anastasio of Kotaku notes the more « reserved » nature of Smash Bros. move sets in comparison to the dynamic moves found in Rivals of Aether. The playable roster includes Absa, Etalus, Forsburn, Kragg, Maypul, Orcane, Wrastor, Zetterburn, along with six DLC characters: Ranno, Clairen, Sylvanos, Elliana, and guest characters Ori and Sein from Ori and the Blind Forest and Shovel Knight. Additionally, a crossover skin of Ragnir from Brawlhalla, exclusive to the character Maypul, was released on January 17, 2018, alongside a Ranno skin exclusive to the character Wu Shang from Brawlhalla.
